These handmade lacquer boxes in traditional black and red originate from Bagan, Burma in Southeast Asia. The lacquer is manufactured from tree-sap drawn from the Melanorrhoeausitata tree found in the north-east of the country. Pigments of ocher and indigo are added to produce the desired vibrant color and several coats are applied to the boxes to give them a stunning luster. The boxes are then expertly decorated with a fine metal point which is used to etch grooves that are then filled with colored lacquer and left to dry and finally polished. These boxes are not only waterproof but also very durable.
